Art or Craft?

So much argument about what is considered art and what is considered craft.

The fact is, crafting is an art and art is a craft. Anything you don with your own hands, creating a finished piece, is crafting including painting. Why there is this crazy division, I'll never really understand.

The only time I can conceive of dividing, in any way, the subject of craft and art, is when you need to categorize something.

When you pick up any sort of tool and create something with it, it is a craft. You can craft a painting, a quilt, even furniture. Crafting itself is the only possible division, as it can fall into so many different categories from the simple handicraft to the fine sculpture.

When you think of crafts, think 'variety'.

Hi,
I came across your blog in a search for metal scroll design ideas.
My wife and I have a small booth at a small town consignment shop in texas. We have been going to estate and garage sales to find items to put in the booth to sell. Some success, but not quite where we want to be.
The owner of the consignment store has an area where he puts items made of "wrought iron". Rod, flat mild steel etc bent into shapes from benches to planters, and some cut items like texas stars etc, made in Mexico for the most part. Kinda cheap and country looking.
These items sell VERY well, at a decent markup from what I have calculated.
I have a good working space, a steel yard close by, and have orderd a basic scrolling tool. I can weld, work with wood, generally pretty handy. The wife is home all day and handy also.
So, to make a long reply short, I read thru your blog and realized that you have some really good and encouraging advice. I am having a hard time finding craft sites that really have any images or ideas for scroll/bend work in metal. Any ideas?
Thanks,
ds

First let me apologize for taking so long to notice and comment on your message, here. I've been running to meet myself.

There used to be all sorts of magazines and books on metal work. Wonder what happened.

If all else fails, I do have a couple ideas. I'd search around online, at the galeries and shops in NM, especially those in Santa Fe. There's loads of pics of metal works that at least you could get some inspiration from.

I'll try to dig up some of those links for you.
